The Manila Super Series 9 kicked off on the 1st of this month and it concluded yesterday, 7th October. The Manila Super Series had a lot of events including the Warm Up event, Megastack, Knockout event, Big Blind Ante event and of course the Main Event. the event also scheduled various satellites for all the events respectively.
Singaporean Tan Wah Meng claimed the most coveted prize at the series, the PSPC Platinum Pass. Tan overcame a huge Main Event field of 947 entries, defeating Vietnam’s Le Ngoc Khanh at heads up. This was an incredible achievement for a player whose live tournament career has only begun to take flight.
The Main Event paid out 141 places. Notable finishes include Martin Gonzales (9th), Adones Carmona (13th), Jessie Leonarez (16th), and William Ysmael (19th). Tan’s largest score before bagging this huge event was ~USD 8,600 (INR 6,37,466.3398) for finishing 8th at the APL Vietnam Main Event. With this big win under his belt, his new personal benchmark is now PHP 1,182,500 (USD 21,800 / INR 16,15,903.0474).
Tan is now the 24th Asian player and the 4th Singaporean player to win the trip to Bahamas in 2019. Previous winners from his country were Wilson Lim, Tzai Wei Phua, and Ignatius Meng. Other pay-outs in the Main Event are listed below:
While Tan secured the Main Event, Vamerdino Magsakay won the Warm Up event. The series opener had a big turnout of 558 entries for the Warm Up event. This generated a smashing prize pool of PHP 2,381,544 (USD 44,000). Filipino player Magsakay overcame the competition besting other fellow countrymen at the final table to win PHP 330,000 (USD 6,100). Other pay-outs are listed below.
With all these highlight events mentioned and discussed, one major highlight of the Manila Super Series 9 was Mike Takayama being awarded 2018 Asia Player of The Year (APOY) title.
The Filipino pro has had quite a breakthrough year as Takayama etched his name in poker history as the first homegrown Filipino to win a WSOP bracelet. Adding to his achievements, he was officially awarded the 2018 PokerStars Asia Player of the Year title.
