Srijan Batra wins SSS Event #13 on Spartan

Everyone loves Freezeout tournaments, where players are more careful of their stacks and the unnecessary all-in situations are avoided, bringing in more skill in these tournaments. Yesterday’s third tournament of the Spartan Super Series (SSS) was a freezeout tournament and it was a very successful one, like most SSS tournaments.

SSS Event #13 INR 200k GTD had a buy-in of INR 1,500 and this attracted a total field of 131 entries, slightly missing the advertised guarantee. The top 17 entries were paid out a minimum cash prize of INR 3,140 but the player to walk away with the biggest prize from this field was Srijan Batra aka ‘ThePokerDawn’.

Batra beat ‘Aquaman’ in heads-up of this tournament, after one superhero ‘Anteman’ already shipped a tournament on SSS Day 3. Batra received the winner’s cheque of INR 50,320 while Aquaman took away a prize of INR 34,000 for finishing second in this freezeout event.

Gutshot caught up with Batra after this victory. The 27-year old from Kotdwara, Uttarakhand, started playing poker 3 years back. He had a few of his friends who played poker a bit and he initially got his understanding of the game from them. “Frankly, I started playing poker with real money right from the start, but the game is never easy. It keeps changing everyday with more and more players and their ways of playing,” he said about his introduction to the game.

He added, “I have been learning the game and it’s never enough but I believe my game has improved from how I started. Of course, there are rough hands when your big pairs lose and awkward hands win. One of the crucial hands that was not good to start with but just to get into the game – I played with T-6 suited and eventually went along to win a big pot which doubled my stack. It was somewhere in the middle of the tournament when it was getting little slow. Apart from that, my QQ clicked once in the start to give me a good stack. Building your stack through time is what I prefer apart from at least 1-2 double ups in the middle occasionally.”

Talking about his future plans in poker, he said, “Well, the game is very interesting and there is a lot to learn. I will continue to do so and will continue to play online. Hopefully, Gutshot Magazine will connect with me again for another feature????.” Keep reading GutshotMagazine.com for more updates from the ongoing Spartan Super Series.
