4th March 2022 was no normal day for the international and domestic cricket fraternity. Australian cricket and poker player Shane Warne passed away due to a massive heart attack. At the age of 52, the spin wizard passed away and took away a piece of our hearts along with him. While most of the world knows him as an ace cricketer, as a member of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, not many know that he was a great poker player too.
He is considered to be one of the best spin bowlers the world of cricket has ever seen. Warne played his first-ever Test match in 1992 when he was 23-years-old. This unstoppable cricketer went on to win more than 1,000 international wickets in more than 190 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 140 Test matches.
Warne was a sponsored player by well-known poker site 888poker between 2008 to 2015. “We are extremely heartbroken to hear of the untimely passing of Aussie cricket legend and ex 888 ambassador, Shane Warne. His energy, inspiring presence, and passion for getting things right remain with us. Our sincere condolences to his kids, family, and other loved ones. RIP legend,” 888poker posted on its social media handle.

The largest amount he cashed was in the A$ 10,000 + 200 No Limit Hold’em – High Stakes Event where he walked away with $35,899 after busting in the third spot.

Indian poker players took to their respective Instagram handles to post about the loss of this great cricketer cum poker player. Well-known poker player Antanas “Tony G” Guoga took to Twitter and posted the following:
I really cannot believe the sad news about the passing of @ShaneWarne – it was only a few days ago that we had a conversation about having a poker game soon. He will go down as a sporting legend of the century. He also did a lot for raising the profile of poker worldwide.

The skill to play poker runs in the blood of Warne, as his son Jackson Warne is also a well-known poker player. This father-son duo have participated in several tournaments together and would proudly post their poker achievements on social media.
Other than cricket and poker, Warne was also a philanthropist. In 2004, he launched the Shane Warne Foundation to help underprivileged children and assist the ill. As per news reports, the Australian cricketer had announced that he will be auctioning off his ‘baggy green’ for charity. With this Warne was able to raise approximately $700,000 for the red cross bushfire appeal.
Thankyou so much to everyone that placed a bid & a huge Thankyou / congrats to the successful bidder – you have blown me away with your generosity and this was way beyond my expectations ! The money will go direct to the Red Cross bushfire appeal. Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou ❤️ pic.twitter.com/vyVcA7NfGs

While the world knows him as the pride of Australia, a fantastic poker player, and more, his near and dear ones describe him as an incredibly loyal friend and as a person who brought joy to others. Warne will forever be in our memories, not just as a fabulous spinner but also as a fine poker player and a large-hearted human being.
