The year 2020 has been incredibly bad for global citizens as well as our poker Industry. From the death of poker players Suzie Zhao, Robert Gray to poker ambassador Mike Sexton and now Darvin Moon.
Amateur poker player Darvin Moon passed away at the age of 56 on 19 September due to complications caused by surgery. Moon hailed from Oakland, Maryland and was not a professional poker player. He was a self-taught player who won the $10,000 buy-in World Series of Poker Main Event via a $130 buy-in satellite tournament at a casino in West Virginia.
Moon recorded six cashes in live poker tournaments other than at the WSOP main event, totaling around $23,000 in earnings. He navigated his way though a field of 6,494 players to make it to the final table as the chip leader. He outlasted a number of big names at the final table, including Phil Ivey and Jeff Shulman to make it down to heads-up play against Joe Cada. Moon ultimately finished in second place, turning his $130 investment into $5.2 million.
Thanks for the memories Darvin moon. You inspired so many people and starred in one of the most memorable final tables in WSOP history. We will never forget. Rest In Peace. pic.twitter.com/QHDArJLDyh

Talking about his personal life, Moon always said, “I’ve always been poor. I can be poor after this too. We’ve lived on 20 to 25 thousand dollars a year for 26 years. I can now live the rest of my life comfortably. I am still working, because my entire family was raised that way.” Poker players that knew him very well mentioned that Moon was an extremely grounded person. Despite the earnings as a poker player, he always went back to work running his logging company, though he was no longer relying on the income it provided. Here’s a snippet of Darvin talking about his experience about his victories in the game:
Moon’s unassuming and amateur style made him a TV hit when the 2009 World Series of Poker Main event tournament was aired on ESPN. Our heart reaches out to Moon’s family, near and dear ones. For more updates about the poker industry, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com
