Riot Games Launches Animated Series Arcane on Netflix


Netflix and Riot Games announced on Monday that an animated series will be aired on the streaming platform. In the history of Riot Games, this is the first-ever move in this direction.

The series called ‘Arcane’ was announced in 2019 by Riot Games and it was supposed to release in 2020. The project got delayed as no distribution partner was revealed and also due to the pandemic. But Riot Games has now announced that Netflix is its distribution partner and has confirmed that the series will debut later this year.

The series ‘Arcane’ will be developed and produced by Riot Games alongside Fortiche Productions. The plot of the series is about the origins of two League of Legends characters who are set in Piltover, a fictional land. The deal between Riot Games and Tencent, will enable Riot Games to Arcane will also premiere in China as it will air on Tencent video.

The deal was signed by Netflix Director of Original Animation Dominique Bazay and Riot Games’ Global President of Entertainment Shauna Spenley. Talking about Arcane, Bazay says, “Arcane has been created like a love letter to our fans and players, who have been insisting for a more cinematic experience that helps them dive deeper into the world of League of Legends. With the incredible global branding that Netflix has received, the platform is the perfect partner to help us bring Arcane to people around the globe.”

Riot Games always wanted to get into the world of television and in late 2019, as part of its wider expansion plans beyond video games. These video games were the only major product for the first decade since the time Riot Games was launched. In the last 12 months, the gaming company has also released a string of new games, which include first-person shooter game Valorant, Wild Rift, the mobile version of League of Legends among others.
