Poker is a worldwide phenomenon, and the South Asian countries view it as a lucrative business. Recently, Resorts World Sentosa grabbed headlines with their poker decisions. The luxury resort recently installed four poker tables this year and plans to add at least eighteen more to offer more playing options to clients. With the increased number of poker tables, there’s every chance that Resorts World Sentosa might soon become the host of some of the biggest poker series.
The four tables have already started paying off, so says the property’s Chief Casino Officer, Andrew MacDonald, “The game in and of itself needs to make enough money to justify its position but the way we’ve got the rake set up, we’re generating significant revenues.”
Singapore has had an interesting history with poker. It was only in 2004 that the country allowed their first two integrated casinos at Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. Following that, in 2006, Singapore enacted the Casino Control Act that legalized the working of these casinos. Our research shows that Sentosa had about seven tables earlier, that offered No Limit Texas Hold’em games earlier, making it one of the most popular live poker venues.

Surprisingly Singapore still has legislation in place that bans online poker, the Remote Gambling Act of 2014 which banned all online gambling, including online poker sites. The stringent law, fined players SG$5,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months and operators with a penalty between SG$20,000 and not more than SG$500,000 and/or imprisonment not exceeding 7 years warded any online poker games in Singapore. With only two casinos that allow poker and a ban on online poker, Singapore is currently at a flux state when it comes to welcoming poker players.
With one of the only two resorts in Singapore upping their poker ante, things might look up for the poker community in Singapore. Also, there’s a chance for several more casinos to open up in Singapore, and all of this could be a big boost to the country.
Several regions and countries all over the world are warming up to poker and gambling. Earlier, Dubai, part of the Emirates, decided to give its first gaming licence to Wynn Resorts, which experts think will be instrumental in paving the way for poker and other card games in the island region.
However, a poker expansion should not be a major problem in Singapore, as it is a multi-religious country, so there is no religion-backed law that bans gambling or card games, making it one of the most lucrative regions for the poker industry right now. With so many countries and regions warming up to poker, it’s only a matter of time before other nearby countries and regions think of increasing their poker and gaming footprint.
