Unheard Stories: Shardul Parthasarathi gets candid about poker, life & more

Poker player Shardul Parthasarathi recently made headlines when he shipped several tournaments during India Online Poker Championship (IOPC) January 2021. Today, Parthsarathi is a well-known poker player, a multi-table tournament (MTT) coach and more but not many know that he is also an engineer by profession. The poker pro is a BTech graduate in electronics and instrumentation from Vellore Institute of Technology. Parthasarathi hails from Chennai but he currently resides in Mumbai. 

This MTT coach had worked with several multinational companies for around 3.5 years before he joined PokerDangal as a tournament director in mid 2018. Gutshot had a chat with Parthasarathi to know more about his game and how he opened up to his family about his passion for poker.

When did you first tell your family about your love for poker?

My parents knew that I was playing poker since the time I was pursuing engineering. There were times when I would literally not ask for money or ask for a lot more and eventually my dad found out about my passion for poker. Back in the day, during 2011-2014, I used to travel to Bangalore to play in clubs and that’s where it started.

You’ve had some great wins in IOPC Jan 2021. What’s your plan for the future?

IOPC was pretty decent and my plans ahead would be to learn the game well, study and get better at it. I am looking forward to playing live series taking place next year and preparing for the same.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I wish to visit several countries across the globe and I hope that my game will get better. Hopefully, I’ll get to live a better and healthier life mainly by doing things which make me happy.

We had a talk with Shardul’s mother, Mrs Jayanthi Parthasarathi to know more about her son’s poker career. 

How important is it for a family to know what if someone has a unique choice of career like playing poker professionally?

One should enjoy the work that makes him/her happy in life. My son has taken up a decision to be a poker player. I only wish him the very best in life. 

Any funny incidents come to mind related to Shardul opening up about him playing poker? If yes, please share them with us.

Not funny particularly, but Shardul’s father had visited the US for a cousin’s wedding and that’s when he saw Shardul play at a casino there. He was very surprised to see him playing and winning in the US.  

Talking about this particular incident, Shardul adds, “We were in Atlantic city at a casino. I happened to see a poker room which had 60-70 tables. I sat down to play and ended up playing for hours together. My father eventually had to ask me to leave the place. I think he did not expect his son to be good at the game.
