When you are new to the poker scene, playing on a table with seasoned players can get a little daunting. Especially when they are throwing around poker jargons like it’s a whole new language. But don’t let this deter you from playing the game. Just like there are different languages you can learn, you can learn the poker language too. Here are a few jargons you need to know:
The term ‘belly buster’ is a word used to refer to an inside straight draw. It is also another word for the term ‘gutshot’ (see below). Players can also get a double belly buster i.e., when they hold two gutshots.
BRM stands for ‘bankroll management’ and refers to the skill and practice of keeping a certain amount of money aside to play poker. This is important for poker players as it helps them play responsibly. The goal of a good bankroll management is to minimize the risk of losing everything when playing as players can get carried away.
A situation where the result of a hand is close to fifty-fifty is called a coinflip. This happens when two players have a close to half the chance of winning the pot. The word ‘flip’ is a also shorter version that is used to refer Coin Flip.
The term donk is used to describe a weaker player at the table. The term is short for donkey and must be used with caution. It is considered a derogatory term by many people. While among people who are well versed with the game it is a technical term to refer to a players competency level.
Gutshot is a poker jargon used to refer to an inside straight draw. An example of a gutshot is when the player holds 78TJ and is waiting for a 9 to complete the straight. The term is quite popular among players.
