Have you ever been a part of a poker conversation or sat with a bunch of poker enthusiasts and found yourself in a spot where you don’t understand a certain word or phrase? Just like that, you’re completely bewildered. To save you from such situations, we aim at teaching you some common and uncommon poker terms and phrases through our poker dictionary series.

In this article we will talk about the term ‘edge.’ Well, we all know what an edge means, but what is its relevance in poker? We’re here to tell you that! Read on to find what ‘edge’ means in poker.

What is ‘Edge’?

An ‘edge’ in poker means just what it would in a literary sense. Having an edge in poker means being in an advantageous or favourable position. When a player is in a better position or has an upper hand over his opponents, the player is said to have an edge.

For example, a dealer is always said to have an edge over the other players on the table, since the dealer is the last one to act. The dealer can decide the action he wishes to take after observing how the other players before him have acted. There are other ways too, such as having a better set of cards, having a bigger stack at disposal and so on. A player who has been playing for several years can also have an edge over players who are new to the game due to the experience he has.

How to play if you have an ‘Edge’?

If you have an edge, you obviously have a favourable advantage over the other players. You can use this strategically to win the hand. You can use it to aggressively put pressure on your opponents if you have better cards or if you have a higher stack. However, if not used well, a player might even end up losing in spite of having an edge.
