The game of poker is a vast ocean filled with strategies, life lessons, and poker terms. There’s a of stuff that can be uncovered when studying or learning poker. In this article, we’ll be looking at the poker term called ‘Ace.’ The term ‘Ace’ is not only associated with poker but with card games in general. The ‘Ace’ card is thought to be the highest or lowest ranking card depending on the game. In poker, the value of the ‘Ace’ card trumps all other cards, meaning that it is the highest-ranking card in the game. Let’s dig a little deeper and learn about it.

What does ‘Ace’ mean?

The Ace is a playing card found in all four suits of a deck of cards. It is usually a card with the highest value meaning that it is higher than the King card. While in other games, the card can also have the least value meaning that it is lower than the Deuce (two). Since ‘Ace’ is often associated with a high hand, it is also used in English to describe when some excels in a particular activity.

Origins of the term ‘Ace’

The term is mostly derived from the Latin word, ‘As’ which means a coin that has little value. While when coming to Old English and Old French, the word was used to call the one dot side of dice. Initially, the term was associated with bad luck as on dice it was the lowest roll possible, and it was later assigned as the lowest ranking card in a suit. However, during the French Revolution, the Ace card was elevated to signify the highest card in the deck. This was symbolic for the ordinary (low ranking) man’s victory over the aristocracy (high ranking).

How to play with an ‘Ace’ in poker?

When playing poker, getting two aces as starting hands leaves the player in an advantageous position. Players with strong hands like this must remember to fast-play with these hands before the flop. Always try to build a big pot and continue to raise the bet if no one has raised. This will help the average pot that you win with pocket aces become higher.
