Mortal Kombat: Video games have always been known to suffer from unfaithful movie adaptations. Even the thought of taking lovable game characters to the big screens was enough to irk fans and cause an uproar.

However, the past few years have been kind with many current filmmakers proving that they can produce good video game movies while remaining somewhat faithful to the source material. The flying success of movies like Detective Pikachu, Wreck-It Ralph etc. have set the standard for many upcoming video game-based films pretty high. Here are some of the highly anticipated ones to be released.

Mortal Kombat

Set to be released on 23 April, 2021, Mortal Kombat is one of the first movies that fans will be able to enjoy. Since the trailer of the movie dropped, the gaming world has been buzzing with excitement. The game itself is a classic and falls under the combat genre in video games. While there have been past adaptations of the game, this one directed by Simon MuQuoid is expected to be the best from the lot. The movie will be released in theaters and on HBO Max.

Uncharted

Out of all the games in this list, there has never been a much more requested one than the Uncharted series. Plans for a movie adaptation of the game had started ever since its PlayStation3 release in 2007. Now finally, fans will get what they’ve been asking for. The movie will star Avengers: Endgame actor Tom Holland. He will be playing the younger version of Nathan Drake, the game’s protagonist. Holland will be acting alongside Mark Wahlberg who will be acting as the main character’s best friend and mentor, Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan. The movie is slated for a release date on 18 February, 2022.

Super Mario Bros Movie

Currently in the filming process, a great movie adaptation for Super Mario Bros. has been long overdue. The popular Nintendo game captured the hearts and minds of kids and adults alike when it was first released to the masses. It is sad to say that until 2021, the iconic game has not even had one good film adaptation. Well, that’s all about to change as an upcoming animated movie is in the works with Nintendo teaming up with Illumination Entertainment for the movie. Fans can expect the movie to be released anytime in 2022.

Halo

While every game on this list will be given a movie adaptation, the beloved first-person shooter game, Halo will be getting its own TV series. That’s right, fans will not only be given a single two hour movie but an entire series. The film will be set in the 26th century and will follow the protagonist Master Chief as he fights off the Covenant, an alien threat to protect all of humanity. The series will debut on the streaming platform, Paramount+ sometime in 2022.
