Maria Ho Calls The New WSOP Format INTERESTING

Maria Ho is one of poker’s most influential women players, earning an estimate of more than $4 million in poker tournaments. She is also a goodwill ambassador for poker and has appeared in various other TV shows over the years.

Gambling.com (GDC) had an insightful interview with Maria Ho, asking about her thoughts on the latest WSOP format. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) recently announced their decision to hold a mix of live and online tournaments for their 2020 Main Event. The hybrid format was adopted to ensure that all precautionary measures were taken for a safe playing environment.

Maria stated that she found the format interesting and that it was surely better than nothing at all, keeping in mind the fact that many poker players thought that there would be no WSOP main event this year. When news of the worldwide pandemic hit, many in the industry were left wondering about the future of live poker.

When asked whether online poker would overtake the offline version, Ho replied that both were important and had their own perks. “The best way would be for both to co-exist alongside each other because ultimately, the goal is about keeping the game alive,” Ho commented. She further stated that live poker is a key part of the industry and should never be completely stopped.

The 51st edition of the Main Event was originally slated to commence on 26 May at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas but was eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since many countries went under lockdown it was clear that the WSOP would be unable to hold the tournament live.

It was a big blow to the poker community but now that the event is finally happening, the medium through which it does, doesn’t really matter. Ho further stated that the new format has now opened an option to play poker without putting people’s health at any kind of risk. Apart from the WSOP, the interview also covered various topics regarding women in poker, the importance of a comfortable environment for new players, her involvement with PokerGo among other things.
