Poker is a game that takes a lot of time, patience, and effort to master. Professional poker players in the industry spend years playing and perfecting their skills, with many of them going on to become world champions. In an industry mostly dominated by men, women have also made their mark. One such woman is Maria Ho, a Taiwanese-American poker player and one of the top female poker players in the world.
Born on 6 March, 1983 in Taipei, Taiwan Maria is the youngest of two siblings. Her family moved to the United States when she was only four years old. She started playing poker in college, the competitive nature of the game along with the psychological aspects of it intrigued her to play the game further. Through months of intense study, Maria started playing and winning in local tournaments, performing better than players who had more experience.
Today, she has had over USD 4 million in poker tournament earnings and was also inducted into the Women in Poker HALL OF FAME 2018. In 2019, she won Global Poker Awards Broadcaster of the Year and is the only person to be the Last Woman Standing for four years in the WSOP(E) Main Event. Maria has been quiet active since she found her success in poker. Here are some of the other things she has done besides being a total pro at poker:
Ho appeared in the fifteenth installment of The Amazing Race, an American reality show with fellow poker professional Tiffany Michelle. The season was the last time the show featured 12 teams of two, as the following seasons began featuring 11 teams of two. They competed as the only all female team in the competition and came in sixth in the race.
She traveled to Hong Kong in 2008 to participate in the World Mahjong Tour where she went head to head with Chinese and Taiwanese celebrities and professional Mahjong players.
On 22 February, 2020 Maria appeared in a YouTube channel called the Try Guys, where she played and taught poker to the four Try Guys: Keith, Zach, Ned, and Eugene. The thoroughly entertaining video, which currently has over 6.1 million views, features the poker professional sharing her tips while also attempting to beat the four guys in a game of poker.
Besides all these, Maria has also appeared in the ‘Hollywood Week’ of American Idol, season 3, The Bonnie Hunt Show in 2008, and Anderson Cooper 360. Maria also wrote for a number online poker magazines to websites. Her most notable piece was her contributed to the book ‘Winning Women of Poker: Secret Strategies Revealed’. She also recently featured in the India Poker Championship’s Final Table Series as a guest commentator. Maria Ho is truly one of the most accomplished players in the industry and we have no doubt that she has a lot more to offer in the coming years.
