Maiden WSOP bracelets for David Lambard, Robert Mitchell

Event 36: $3,000 NLH Shootout

This was the second Shootout Event of the 50th WSOP series in Las Vegas and it attracted a playing field of 313 players which created a prize pool of slightly below $900k. The winner barely had around $160k in live poker tournament winnings prior to this and here, he added the top prize of $207,193 to his poker bankroll.

It was 44-year old David Lambard who emerged victorious in the Shootout Event and he finally laid hands on a WSOP gold bracelet after first getting into poker more than 10 years ago. He had to shoot past a tough field including the world’s highest earning poker player, Justin Bonomo. Eventually, he won it by beating poker pro and coach, Johan ‘YoH ViraL’ Guilbert.

Talking about the win, he said, “Actually, I knew this whole field was top notch. They are all wizards, they are all super pros, this was a top field going on. I was well aware of that. A lot of these tournament pros I don’t even follow, I just know they are tough. I came with my own style. The only way to win a tournament is to have no fear.”

Event #37: $800 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack

The new tournament to come to an end had a low buy-in which attracted a huge field of 2,808 entries. It then took 3 days for this field to narrow down to just a single winner and that winner was Salt Lake’s Robert Mitchell. He was dealt some favourable cards on the final day and that led to him keeping the lead and holding it all the way to the title.

Once again, we had a first-time bracelet winner and the 41-year old player bagged $297,537 for his efforts here. Talking about the win, Mitchell said, “Obviously, the money is surreal, but that’s what poker players play for – the bracelet. To have one now on my resumé feels good and it gives me more validation as a poker player.”

In the final hand, Mitchell was up against Marco Bognanni and the tournament wrapped up in style. Bognanni said ‘All-in’ with pocket Threes and that was the best thing ever for Mitchell who held pocket Aces. This win came after Mitchell already earned three other cashes in the series so far!
