Las Vegas Officer shot outside Circus Circus Casino

Las Vegas well-known for its casinos, hotels and entertainment-fueled economy was planning for a comeback by reopening its casinos such as Harrah’s Caesars Palace after being hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Following the death of 46-year-old in Minneapolis, hundreds and thousands of protesters have been rallying for days across the country calling for justice for George Floyd, carrying placards that read “Black Lives Matter”. The ongoing series of riots and protests against police brutality began as local protests in Minneapolis before spreading throughout the United States and then worldwide.

Recently, a police officer in Vegas named Shay Mikalonis remains on a life support after being shot during a protest on the Las Vegas Strip. The 29-year-old was shot after police tried to disperse a large crowd of protesters in front of Circus Circus Hotel and Casino that was shuttered due COVID-19. They were being hit by rocks and bottles from the crowd. While the police force tried to detain some people, Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff, Joe Lombardo told reporters that, “a shot rang out and officer went down,” whose suspect is in custody. LVMPD Homicide Detectives said they located video surveillance of the suspect firing a handgun at the officers as he walked down the street.

More than 300 people have been arrested during three nights of demonstrations and 25 Las Vegas officers have been injured. On Saturday, officers were using tear gas and pepper balls to disperse the crowd. At least 12 major cities have declared a curfew. As of 2 June, 11 deaths related to demonstrations were been confirmed. Yesterday in St. Louis, 77-year-old retired police captain David Dorn was shot and killed by looters at a pawn shop. There have been numerous news and videos of aggressive police actions reported. However, the wounded officer was in grave condition at University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Lombardo said, “This is a sad night for the LVMPD family and a tragic night for our community.”
