While speaking to Joe Ingram on the ‘Poker Life’ podcast, Martin revealed how he started out in poker and worked as a radio DJ at a rock station in Southern Alberta at the age of 20. With the low listenership in a town with no acquaintances, he often visited casinos and played live poker to kill time.

While he had played poker casually with his friends, this was his first time playing for ‘real money’. Martin also picked up some poker books to learn the game’s strategies. Starting with $1/$2 NLHE cash games in various cardrooms across Alberta, Martin realized that he was making more per hour playing poker than at his radio job. So, at 21 years of age, he left his job and decided to play cards for a living.

He became a professional poker player in 2014 and played low-stakes live cash games. According to Hendon Mob, his first recorded cash came in November 2015, when he finished at the 10th spot and pocketed C$1,880 in the DeepStacks Poker Tour event in Calgary. He recorded his first win in May 2016 by shipping the $235 NLHE Thursday Thrilla Black Chip Bounty event to win $5,805.

Apart from playing poker on live tables, Martin played the card game online and has been streaming on Twitch since 2015. He has also appeared on the live streams of Live at the Bike and was a cast member on Season 3 of Big Brother Canada in 2015. After failing to do well, he returned to the show for the 5th Season in 2017 and won the series.

2018 was a very successful year for Martin as he recorded a 2nd place finish in the NLHE event to pocket $36,590 at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure before winning the Main Event at the Summer Super Stack to earn C$49,700.

He also recorded his best-ever live tournament score in October of that year, finishing second place in the $600 Main Event at Run It Up Reno VII to pocket $48. Apart from that, Martin has also fared well on the biggest stage in poker. Having participated in the World Series of Poker (WSOP), he has recorded 26, with most coming while playing online. Kevin Martin was recently seen featuring on the Game of Gold by Poker After Dark as well.
