IOPC Jan/Feb 2023: What Do Our Pros Have To Say?

The 14th edition of the India Online Poker Championship (IOPC) begins tomorrow, and we can’t wait for some uneven-seen before action and fireworks to unravel. The IOPC Jan/Feb 2023 edition promises to be a blockbuster with the highest-ever guarantee of a massive ₹43 Crore and a leaderboard worth ₹1.5 Crore.

If we are so excited, we cannot imagine the level of excitement and adrenaline the players must be experiencing right now as they gear themselves up for 17 days of India’s biggest online poker fest. Curious, we got in touch with some of the top pros and regs from the circuit who are eagerly waiting to grind at the IOPC series.

First things first, we asked players for their initial reaction to the announcement of the series. Spartan Poker and India Poker Championship (IPC) had announced the schedule for two of it’s biggest poker series, IOPC, which would be held online in January-February 2023 and IPC, which was to be played live in February 2023. Now that’s what #BestOfBothFelts looks like, right! Spartan Poker pro Zarvan Tumboli rightly named it “Double dhamakaa” when we asked him.

Over the years, Spartan Poker, with its most celebrated series IOPC, has set a benchmark for the online poker series happening in the country. IOPC is a name that every poker player, whether big or small, eagerly waits for. Not to forget the competitiveness that it brings along for the players. “Always fun, challenging, and full of value” is how Samay Singh Modi describes IOPC as a series.

Legend winner Dhinesh Kumar, a well-known name in the circuit, says, “IOPC is probably the biggest Indian poker series and it’s been happening for so many years now. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the series is the leaderboard. It is not easy to grind for over 20 days on a stretch. I always have huge respect for players who win the leaderboard. The second thing that comes to mind is the huge guaranteed games with low buy-ins, which is really good for the low stakes players to compete in tournaments with massive GTDs.”

Well, yes. The massive guarantees are what make IOPC the grand affair that it is. To top it, IOPC Jan/Feb 2023 is pushing all limits and breaking all records with the highest-ever guarantees and the hefty leaderboard on offer. And oh, did we tell you about the IOPC Jan/Feb 2023 Main Event The Crown, which alone has a guarantee of ₹5 Crore on offer.

“IOPC every time comes with bigger guarantees and this time, the 5 Crore GTD Main Event is the biggest attraction and everyone would be already eyeing the crown!!!,” says Kumar. The Spartan Poker pro confirmed saying, “The star attraction of every IOPC series has been The Crown tournament and it keeps getting bigger. With a massive ₹5 Crore guarantee, it is going to be huge.”

That was all about the shiny rewards that IOPC has to offer. But remember the saying, ‘No gains without pains?’ Well, to gain the coveted IOPC titles and prestigious rewards at the series, the players every season go through an enormous amount of hard work and pain, which often goes unnoticed behind the envious rewards.

“From a professional point of view, it’s really good with GTDs and at the same time challenging to grind for such long stretches because it needs a lot of focus for sure,” shares Kumar.  Modi adds, “IOPC has the biggest guarantees and is a longer series; hence it requires a different level of discipline and focus.”

No prizes for guessing; our next question was how the players are preparing to face these challenges in the coming days. “Enough rest, calm mindset, dealing with variance, and having fun,” is what Modi said he will be focusing on.

Kumar sheds more light on his prep, saying, “First thing is first bankroll management. Since it’s a long series, you should have enough bankroll to play your games and it’s better to make an excel sheet and get a rough calculation of how much roll it’s needed. Next is obviously health; since IOPC is a long stretch series, we need to grind from 12 PM if we are going after the leaderboard. So a proper meal routine and sleep is very crucial.”

Abhishek Goindi

All being said and done, one cannot deny that IOPC is a one-of-a-kind experience for the players as well as us poker enthusiasts. Sharing his excitement about grinding at the series, poker coach and pro player Abhishek Goindi says, “It’s always fun to play an online series like IOPC.” Poker pro Dhaval Mudgal says, “Always the biggest series of the year so looking forward to the next two weeks.”

After knowing what’s on these players’ minds, we could not let them go without asking them if they have anything to say to the players who will be locking horns with them on the virtual IOPC felts. While Kumar and Modi wished their opponents “Goodluck!,” “This one is a marathon and burnout in a series like this can be real. So one needs to carefully plan and execute this series from a bankroll and burnout perspective,” says the poker coach Goindi himself.
