In Conversation With Saroj Chudasama Who Scored A 16000% Return On Her Buy-In On IndiaPlays

The game of poker continues to fascinate Indians. To understand from the horse’s mouth what it is like to play poker in India, we got into a candid one-on-one conversation with her, over a cup of piping hot chai. 

How did your poker journey begin? Was it something you always planned on?

No, it wasn’t planned. This all happened in a year’s time. I started playing in December 2020. I was introduced to poker by my better half, Shiv. He is also a full-time poker player. When I started, I wasn’t even aware of the hand strengths, like most beginners. I used to sit beside him and watch him play relentlessly.  Eventually, I started getting curious about how this game works and Shiv would patiently explain it all to me, every aspect of the game and the robust reasoning behind playing every hand. At first, it was hard to understand all of it but once I got the hang of it, there was no turning back. As time passed, I put volume in the games. My journey with poker has been fruitful, from not being able to hold my stack for more than five minutes to now doing deep runs and final tables every other day. I’m truly thankful to Shiv for being absolutely patient with me and for being such a great mentor. 

Congratulations on shipping the IndiaPlays’ One India, One Rupee, One Lakh GTD. What did victory feel like? 

Thank you! It is always a beautiful feeling to beat such a big field and eventually reach the final table. I got a 16000% return on my buy-in, it was surreal.

What do you think about the online poker scene and where do you think IndiaPlays fits into it?

I think we, as a nation, have reached a certain level of maturity with regard to poker in India. It is not considered as a game of gambling but a mind sport, where an individual has to take calculated decisions on many levels to reach the zenith. There is a lot of room for growth in the poker community and I think IndiaPlays has come by at the right time. I am looking forward to playing the tournaments that IndiaPlays has to offer in future.

What are your thoughts about the emergence of women players in India’s poker landscape?

For sure there are a lot of women players making their mark in this male-dominated space and it is changing the whole dynamic of the game; like it is said, ‘men are from Mars and women from Venus.’ People tend to think that female players may be weak in their mental game but in the present day it is quite the opposite of that and one should be wary of their skill and intellect. I hope the number increases as time passes.

You won among a field of 500+ players, with just a single buy-in of ₹1. Are there any strategies or tips you would like to share with players who are also looking to get a 16000% return on IndiaPlays?

I think patience, study and BRM (Bankroll Management) are the keys to success in doing well in this game. Even though the buy-in of the game was just ₹1, I didn’t spew it off and played it with the utmost respect. There was no unnecessary fancy play. Players need to respect the game they are getting into regardless of the amount they put in it. It is also important to enter into a calm and composed mental state while playing a game. One has to keep their ego, anger, frustration and even boredom in check! Keep studying and reviewing the hands you’ve played and I’m sure you will go a long way.
