The DeepStack Open (DSO) joined hands with the Asia Poker League (APL) for the first time ever, to bring a taste of European poker to Asia. This was implemented in the APL DSO Main Event, which was the first tournament to kick off at the APL Road Series Vol.3, played at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
The series has been scheduled to take place between 15-25 November and yesterday, we arrived at the winner of this opening tournament. The 2-day event ended last night, and the rightful winner turned out to be none other than Hong Kong’s Hwang Sang Yeon, outlasting the field of 154 entries.
In heads-up, Hwang defeated local boy Tran Kim Dong, who was the crowd favourite. Hwang took home the top prize of VND 361,340,000 (~INR 11.22 lakh). Hwang registered his first ever major international poker tournament victory, although he has had a bigger cash in the past for finishing sixth in the OPC Macau Main Event earlier this year.
The world-renowned DSO structure gave players a generous starting stack of 300 times the opening big blind, and they stuck by the DSO motto of ‘A buy-in for every player’, and that’s why the low buy-in of just VND 9.9 million.
The Qd Td 6h flop in the final hand saw Dong shoving all-in and revealed 5d 7d with a flush draw. His opponent Hwang had the bigger stack and he called with Qh 6s and two pairs. Dong would’ve needed another Heart to open on the board to complete the Flush, but the 8h on the turn and 8s on the river didn’t help him, giving Hwang the trophy.
