Happy Goyal takes down Adda52’s Godfather tournament

When you think of some of the most popular online poker offerings in India, the Godfather tournament series has to come to your mind, as it offers not just high value in the form of an INR 20 lakh prize pool, but also the chance to fly to an international location and play live poker.

Currently running is the sixth edition of the Godfather series on Adda52 and here, the winners of nine Godfather tournaments from nine consecutive Thursday nights will play in the Godfather 6.0 Finale SnG. This is a ‘winner-takes-all’ format where an INR 7 lakh package trip to play at the 2019 Aussie Millions is up for grabs.

This tournament is usually contested by some of the best poker players in India and yesterday was no different. Last night, a total of 343 entries (including 129 re-entries) paid INR 5,500 to join the tournament which kicked off at 8pm. As the tournament progressed and a majority of players were knocked out, the prize pool ended up being distributed among the top 36 players with a min-cash of INR 9,000.

The player who got past several Adda52 regulars and came out on top of this field was Happy Goyal aka ‘radford’ who won the massive top prize of INR 5,00,000. From this prize money, INR 77,777 will be deducted as an entry into the Aussie Millions Godfather Finale SnG, which will be played after all 9 finalists are decided.

In heads-up, he beat a very well accomplished player in Sriharsha Doddapaneni aka ‘Ivey2’, who has plenty of live and online poker experience in the years he has been active. Here however, Sriharsha couldn’t get past Goyal and had to settle for the runner-up prize of INR 3,20,000.

Another regular on the FT was Apratim Sharma aka ‘checmate’ who finished in 4th place for INR 1,85,000, while Arjanveer Chadha aka ‘arjan30’ was also a part of the action, busting in 5th for INR 1,40,000 in prize money. Missing another 6-figure score was Goonjan Mall aka ‘gmtesting’ who finished in 7th place for INR 65,000. However, he did better on another platform, shipping The Flash on Spartan for INR 2,88,000.

Gutshot caught up with Goyal after this victory to ask him about the tournament. He said, “It was a pretty good one, winning a tournament after a long time. I ran good and did well in whatever I played. Heads-up lasted for around 45 minutes and we were frustrated, with the lead exchanging quite a few times. I saw good competition from arjan30, Ivey2, and gmtesting. In the final hand, Ivey2 had Kh Th and I had As Ks, as we shoved all-in pre-flop. He hit two hearts on the flop but nothing else after that, giving me the victory with just high-card A.”
