Gutshot Poker Dictionary – Tilt

Mental stability is not a destination but a process. In poker, one needs to have a very peaceful state of mind in order to play freely, strategize and make stronger decisions.

While you’re in a fast paced game, one often tends to give in to emotions. The state of playing not up to the mark, or your full potential because of emotion, such as following a losing hand or during a downswing. In particular, tilt is the term used to describe being angry while the player is at the poker table. A tilted player often makes questionable decisions since intense emotion has the ability to shut down the rational side of a players brain. Although primarily associated with anger, taking bad decisions due to emotions such as fear, boredom and tiredness may also be described as tilt.

How to prevent a tilt :

Set a stop-loss

A stop loss refers to having a limit to how much money one is willing to give in. If you lose that stipulated amount, you must be able to take stable decisions. No matter how exciting the pot is, you need to know that playing with scared money could land you in deep trouble.

Take breaks

Longer sessions, specially at night get you tired and have a very strong effect on your mental health. To avoid this, you must set firm limits regarding how long you plan to play. If you take a break, you get to renew your energy and focus in a better manner.

Stop playing

Yes, you heard it right! You must stop playing when you’re on tilt. First, get up from the poker table and take a walk to cool off. Don’t use your break to call someone to discuss a bad beat – this will further tilt you and not help in your mental state. Don’t initiate a conversation with your opponent which could lead to defensive comments that may fuel an argument.

By following these steps you can avoid tilting. These are just a few tips among the many others that we will surely list down in the forthcoming articles. Stay tuned to GutshotMagazine.com.
