GPL India Partners With PokerStars India

The Global Player League, earlier known as the Global Poker League, was a free to play global poker competition that announced in August last year, their intentions to expand to India. In December last year, they confirmed this, by announcing their partnership with the largest talent management company in India, Kwan Entertainment.

Via this multi-year agreement, Kwan would help Mediarex tap into the market of nearly 300 million active gamers in India. However, along with the announcement of GPL coming to India, came the announcement of the brand dropping ‘poker’ from its name, and becoming the ‘Global Player League‘.

What this change would do is take the focus away from poker entirely, and more towards e-sports and video gaming. Now, GPL made another huge announcement by partnering with PokerStars India before the first GPL India. PokerStars is the global poker leader and they recently began operations in India; GPL didn’t miss this opportunity!

Just an hour ago, GPL India announced on their website that PokerStars India will be their exclusive skill-game partner for India’s first long-run poker league, which will take place over a 2-month period. Free qualification to the inaugural GPL India will be open from May to August 2018, on the PokerStars India website. Players who qualify will get a chance to be a part of one of the 6 city-based teams (2 players per team), led by some of India’s top poker pros:

  • Ahmedabad Alphas – Abhishek Rathod
  • Bengaluru Hackers – Vidwath Shetty
  • Chennai Sharks – Vikram Kumar
  • Delhi Diehards – Muskan Sethi
  • Kolkata Creators – Aditya Agarwal
  • Mumbai Jetsetters – Kavin Shah

The season will then be a 4-week long one, where the top 4 teams will move on to the GPL India Finals to play for the title. The Season 1 GPL India Finals are set to take place in November 2018 and this will be a live-streamed, 2-day finale. We are excited to see the Global Player League coming to India. Are you?
