Goa Imposes Night Curfew; What Does It Mean For Casinos?

As India experiences a sharp spike in the coronavirus cases, the state of Goa witnessed a daily rise in cases beyond the 1,000 mark for the second consecutive day. On April 21, the Chief Minister announced a strict night curfew from 10 PM – 6 AM across the entire state. According to the statement, the state-wide restrictions would be observed till 30 April, after which another call would be taken once the situation was reviewed.

Along with this, all the bars and restaurants, entertainment parks, river cruises, public transports, gyms, etc. will have to operate on 50 percent of their capacity. However, casino goers in the state need not fret too much as the CM clarified that while the regulations are in place for the entire state, casinos and hotels will be allowed to operate post the curfew hours at half of their capacity.

In a press conference held on Wednesday, the CM emphasised that once the curfew starts, ‘people should not loiter in public places needlessly.’ Since the first lockdown last year, casinos in the state have experienced a loss in revenue due to the ban on travel and tourism. However, late last year things began to look up as casinos were allowed to restart their operations at half their capacity.

And while many states in the country impose another state-wide lockdown this year as well, casinos and hotels in Goa will continue to remain open but at only 50 percent of their capacity as opposed to being completely shut down.

He also added that industrial and goods transport were excluded from this law. The CM also mentioned that the second wave of the virus was impacting the youth more. Due to this, the board exams for Class X and XII have been postponed. The new dates for the exams will only be announced post 30 April.

As per news reports, the state recorded a total of 1,502 positive cases just this Wednesday alone. Currently, there are 9,300 active cases and already 17 people have succumbed to the virus. The state announced that it was in the process of improving the healthcare infrastructure and the availability of resources. The step was taken to boost the treatment of the virus and to better handle the load of cases.
