Netflix Looking For Executive To Expand Into Gaming Industry

As per news reports, Netflix is looking to expand its video gaming vertical. The OTT platform is searching for an executive to lead its gaming vertical.

Netflix has been approaching several veteran game industry executives for its expansion plans into video gaming space. The streaming platform has been making serious efforts to grow beyond its traditional business especially as the competition from giants like Amazon, Disney and others in the streaming segment has intensified. After the launch of Disney+ in December 2019, Netflix witnessed static growth and its stock value also fell by 29%.

The COVID-19 induced lockdown gave room for the video gaming sector to grow exponentially and now Netflix wants in on all the action happening in this space.

Netflix is yet to decide if they will make their own gaming content or will be licensing it to third-party publishers. It may also use a combination of the two. Though the strategy has not been decided, it is certain that the games will not feature ads, states a news report by The Information.

Netflix has experimented by utilising the plots of movies like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and You vs. Wild and series like Stranger Things, La casa de Papel to develop games from an outside developer. These games used an interactive programing that conceptualised from the movies and series to allow gamers to drive the actions of the characters and also run the gameplay.

With the gaming expansion, Netflix is eyeing at developing a model to Apple’s online subscription, Apple Arcade. The model requires users to pay a fixed monthly amount or subscription to get a single access to streams as well as games. Netflix’s video gaming segment is expected to enter the markets by 2025.

Netflix is also currently considering expanding its video streaming segment by offering ‘N-Plus’ subscriptions. The N-plus will be a higher level subscription that will feature access to podcasts, custom TV show playlists, and behind-the-scenes content for its users.
