Cards and gambling basically go together like salt and pepper, throw anime in the mix and you get one of the best combinations in entertainment history! Anime is a computer animation style originating from the country of Japan. Its popularity has risen tremendously over the past few years with anime’s like Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, Fullmetal Alchemist etc. being one of the most popular.

Card games have also seen a rise in popularity which did not stop only in the confines of traditional card games but has bled into pop-culture as well. One may not always think of anime when it comes to gambling, but these anime prove that the combo works, bringing you a fun, intense, and entertaining look into the gambling world and even elevating it to a fantastical level.

Kakegurui

Originally a Japanese manga series written by Homura Kawamoto it was later adapted into anime. The plot of the story revolves around Yumeko Jabami a sweet girl with an insane appetite for gambling. Set in Hyyakkaou Private Academy, a prestigious school for the elites where the students’ social status is determined through gambling. The hierarchy is disrupted when Yumeko walks in and gambles not for status or power but for the heck of it. You can watch the series on Netflix.

One Piece Film: Gold

This gilded and over-the-top anime is set in an entertainment city run by the show’s antagonist and casino king: Gild Tesoro. The show unfolds to treat us to an amusing time of watching characters gamble away at unrealistically high and unusual rates while also revealing a darker side to its flashy world. Give this crazy anime a watch if you’re into all things gold and gambling!

Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor

Tricked by his co-worker the unlucky Kaiji falls into debt and is forced to gamble his way to freedom through an underground gambling ring on a cruise ship. The show is hailed to be one of the best, helping you empathize with the protagonist and continues to keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s definitely a must watch on this list.

Akagi

Less on cards, Akagi focuses more on the game of mahjong: a tile-based game developed in China during the Qing Dynasty. Although unfamiliar with the game at first, Akagi shows promise and talent which leads him to compete with many members of the mafia. Filled with high stakes and genius, this show is a thrilling ride from start to finish.
