Esports 2021: 5 Things to watch out for

Last year has been quite a rough one. While the year wasn’t a breeze, it resulted in one positive outcome. It helped us change our perspective on a lot of things. We realized what essential means. We realized that material things don’t matter and how important it is to spend time with our loved ones. And of course, apart from polishing our culinary skills, people also discovered their hidden talents. And one of the new found talents is playing esports.

Earlier seen as a means of entertainment and passing time, esports has now become an industry worth $ 1.17 billion. And the year 2020, has been a great accelerator in the process of helping esports gain new heights. Not to forget, esports has now become a sport which is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) & Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and it’s not too far from being recognized as a sport by Indian Olympic Association as well.

In 2021, let’s have a look at the points that need to be highlighted in esports:

Investments in esports

Many global gaming companies like Krafton, Garena and Riot have already invested in the Indian gaming industry and are working closely with Indian gaming startups and developers. Besides, the fact that the gaming community in India alone has more than 300 million active gamers and the number is increasing with each passing day, makes it one of the most prefered markets to invest in.

Content creation

Gaming content is one of the most consumed content online. Esports gives an opportunity for the creation of content like vlogs, blogs, videos, live streams, opinion pieces by experts, and much more around the games, tournaments and esports events. This opens doors to content-related careers in the world of esports

Esports and the Indian ecosystem

The launch of games like Raji, an action-adventure video game set in ancient India and infused with Hindu and Balinese mythology and FAU-G, an action game dedicated to the Indian Army, highlights the potential of made in India games. Another aspect is that such games can preserve Indian history and diversity by passing it down to children and promote it by spreading awareness globally. It wouldn’t be surprising to see games with an Indian touch based on Indian mythology or local sports or local Indian games in the near future.

Esports as a social medium

Streaming, multiplayer modes and other features of esports offer a great opportunity for players to socialize and interact with fellow players. This makes esports perform the role of social media as well. The live chat options within the games help players communicate with other players while playing and help players generate conversations with like-minded players.

Technology and esports

By streaming their game live, players get an excellent opportunity to interact with the viewers in real-time. Also, amateur players can watch and learn the know-hows from pro players with ease. Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized every industry be it medical, education, and even the gaming industry. AI has transformed gaming in terms of gaming characters, analysing the matches in real-time, saving and retrieving data and among other things. Tournament platforms are online portals that help organizers, players efficiently organize and play an online esports tournament. Platforms like Gamerji, GamingMonk, Ustreak have massively helped in making processes like registrations, scheduling, hosting, streaming, communicating and more of esports tournaments super easy and hassle-free.

With these technologies already improving the esports experience, the newer upcoming technologies as well as the undiscovered uses of technology in esports promise to make esports bigger and better in the future.

Esports has come a long way and is gradually being popularized and actively accepted by the masses. The lockdowns have made their way into 2021 as well, this again opens doors for esports to unlock greater potentials and grow extensively in 2021 too.
