Hollywood seems to be warming up to the world of poker once again. While there are talks about a Rounders sequel, poker and casinos have been a mainstay of thriller movies for a long time. And now, Samuel Goldwyn Films has roped in Emile Hersch and India Eisley for a poker-themed thriller, ‘Dead Money.’ The movie is helmed by Luc Walpoth and Josh Wilcox. Aisley has been part of movies like My Sweet Audrina (2016) and the series I Am the Night (2019).
A couple, Andy and Chloe, the former a professional poker player take part in a neighborhood poker game but unwittingly become involved in a cat-and-mouse game with thieves who decide to rob the cash-rich room that day. A frantic turn of events leads to a scenario where Andy has to play the best poker of his life to save his and his girlfriend’s life.
The movie’s trailer dropped recently, and it promises a thrill-a-minute experience. The screenplay seems tight enough to keep the audience engaged throughout the movie. Hersch has previously been part of movies like Into the Wild (2007), Speed Racer (2008), and others.
Dead Money capitulates on one of the most terrifying ideas for a poker player or anyone hosting a poker game – robbers turning up to take away all the spoils. Security and safety are among the major aspects that a poker host would have in mind, and the movie is the perfect flight of fancy.
Samuel Goldwyn is popular for bringing to the audience classics like Memento (2000) and The Passion of the Christ (2004)

Few Hollywood movies feature casinos and poker as a theme, but the ones that do become legendary. One of the most important scenes featuring casinos and poker and a fictional character was in Casino Royale, where James Bond introduces himself with the iconic line, ‘Bond, James Bond.’ Interestingly, the scene and the line were kept in both the first movie, Dr. No (1962), and Casino Royale (2006), the revamped version of the Bond franchise that introduced Daniel Craig as Bond to the new generation.
Dead Money is set for a 13th September release, and it remains to be seen if this thriller makes it to the mark and adds itself to those lists of best poker movies that crop up now and then. The movie is currently billed for a limited release in theaters and on VOD. There’s no word whether the flick will stream on any of the OTT apps. But with so few poker-themed movies around, this one surely won’t have any trouble finding an OTT home.
