Doug Polk Life

Douglas K. Polk was born in Pasadena, California, on 16th December 1988 before his family decided to move to Raleigh, North Carolina. Doug was exposed to strategy games at the age of five by his father, who began teaching him chess.

His interest in strategy games switched from chess to online games after he grew fond of playing World of Warcraft. After graduating from Wakefield High School in 2007, the Pasadena-based poker pro went on to compete in World Cyber Games (WCG) events. This is the place where Polk got the ‘WCGRider’ nickname, which still remains to be his famous alias.

Later on, he made the switch from online games like World of Warcraft to playing poker. Having enrolled at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Polk decided to drop out just before graduating and decided to pursue a career in poker.

In 2015, Doug Polk joined hands with fellow poker pro, Ryan Fee and started a poker training website named Upswing Poker. He went on to announce his retirement from poker in 2018 but decided to return two years later for a challenge match against Daniel Negreanu.
