Christian Pham: The Accidental WSOP Bracelet Winner!

Don’t call it richest just because of the guarantees and prize money, call it the richest poker festival for its prestige and the endless stories that come out of each edition. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) can never run dry because tens of thousands of individuals fly from all over the world to unwrap their own tales.

There is something about this stage – one that creates a lasting impression. From absolute spectacular moments like Chris Moneymaker bluffing Sam Farha to Matt Affleck taking a life-changing beat. What we are about to speak about could be a funny story but motivation keeps a man moving. In a rare occurrence, a player won a WSOP bracelet who would have unregistered if they had allowed him to in the first place.

Christian Pham from Minnesota took down the prestigious tournament beating 219 entries including a few talented poker icons ‘by accident’. The 40-year-old professional poker player said he intended to play no-limit Texas Hold’em. Looking down at the bracelet with a big smile on his face he said, “I would’ve unregistered if I knew what the event was.”

“When I got to the table, and when I got dealt five cards, I realized that something was wrong,” he said. “I said, ‘Oh my god!’ because in Minnesota they don’t have this game.” That day however, the eventual champion won $81,314 along with the coveted gold bracelet and later said, “I think it was a sign of God.”

Shawn Harris, Pham’s dealer at the final table said, “It’s a totally different game. Different mindset. Different strategies.” Pham didn’t realize his mistake until he was dealt five cards instead of the two. He panicked at first, then observed, leaning on helpful players who advised him what could beat what. At the end, Pham also mentioned that, “I didn’t understand much of the game, but enough, and in the future for sure I will register for this game. I love it!”
