Casinos in Cambodia to Reopen with Strict Medical Precautions

The 2020 has a lot of story to tell. It starts from welcoming a new decade to fighting against the harmful coronavirus. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world have lost their jobs, struggling hard after shutting down of non-essentials. And casinos like other industries is one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. But the good news is, the world is recovering after battling for more than 4 months, several casinos are reopening their doors.

When Cambodia reported 107 positive cases, certain measures were introduced by the Ministry of Economy and Finance to contain the spread of COVID-19. The Prime Minister Hun Sen then announced a nationwide lockdown from 1 April 2020 onwards. The government also commanded to “take action in accordance with the law in force accordingly,” against any operators that fail to comply. After spending several dark months, the PM announced on Friday that casinos across the nation would be allowed to resume operations if they meet health requirements to prevent coronavirus outbreaks in their venues.

Cambodia’s casinos, including NagaCorp’s NagaWorld in Phnom Penh and the other gaming venues in border areas such as Bavet and Poipet region, were all ordered closed on 1 April as the government attempted to flatten its COVID-19 curve. According to a spokesperson, the announcement made by the PM came in a cabinet meeting considering the fact that situation in the country had stabilised.

However, the medical measures that casinos will be required to impose have not been specified yet. The government has promised unspecified tax breaks for the country’s casino operators, which could benefit their staffs who have struggled financially during their COVID-19 furloughs. Right now, Cambodia has 141 confirmed cases with 131 already recovered. Phnom Penh still records 46 ongoing cases.
