WPT, partypoker team up to host $500K GTD Shooting Stars for Charity Event

At a time when hospitals are overburdened and several lives around the world remain devastated, poker community has been constantly doing their bit by joining hands with several brands to combat the current health crisis. The situation has truly brought together government, organizations from across the industries and sectors to respond to this global outbreak.

Recently, the World Poker Tour (WPT) announced its first-ever WPT World Online Championships guaranteeing a whopping $100 million running between 17 July to 8 September. As a part of the upcoming festival, both leading brands, WPT and partypoker are teaming up to host the Shooting Stars for Charity event. The tournament that is aimed at finding the cure for COVID-19 will be held across two days from 29 to 30 July for a buy-in of $1,100 promising $500,000.

“The World Poker Tour is thrilled to help give back to the world with our partners at partypoker as part of the Shooting Stars for Charity event,” said Hermance Blum, WPT VP Europe. “This event is primed to help the fight against COVID-19 and we are pleased to welcome the bounties who will play on July 29.”

Shooting Stars for Charity will feature a number of poker pros and celebrities and if someone knocks out a shooting star player they will earn $500 bounty. Those who have already confirmed are 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Ryan Riess, Igor Kurganov, Sam Trickett, 2017 Poker Masters winner Steffen Sontheimer, and rapper Alejandro “Papo MC” Lococo. Kurganov will be donating 100% of all personal winnings from the Shooting Stars for Charity event to 1 Day Sooner. Other high profile names joining the event are former Manchester United footballers Darren Fletcher and Wes Brown.

Abie Rohrig, Communications Director at 1DaySooner said, “We are very grateful for the generosity from partypoker and the players. We are confident that the donations will go a long way toward getting us a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.” As part of the WPT World Online Championships, poker industry members will participate in the Shooting Stars for Charity event. The top 3 finishers in the Poker Industry Invitational, which takes place on July 17, will win a seat to the Shooting Stars for Charity.

partypoker MILLIONS Sochi SHR NLH winner Trickett said, “I am delighted the WPT and partypoker have come together to help make a difference in these difficult times, while also offering players the opportunity to win plenty in cash prizes. I’m looking forward to giving players the chance to take my bounty, and if you think you can beat me, come and give it a go!”

Managing Director of partypoker Tom Waters stated, “The team of bounties for this event are sure to bring excitement and passion to the tables to help raise money for 1 Day Sooner and add another one-of-a-kind element to this festival.”
