Breaking! Meghalaya Legalises Online Gambling And Online Betting

The Meghalaya state government is reportedly working on establishing a framework to legalise online gambling, online gaming, and online betting in the state. The framework aims at transforming the state into a legal gaming hub.

The process of legalising online gaming, gambling and betting in Meghalaya was kick-started by the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Ordinance 2021 in the month of February 2021. The ordinance aimed at reversing the Meghalaya Prevention of Gaming Act of 1970, which prohibited gambling in the state.

Now, Meghalaya has become the third northeastern state following Sikkim and Nagaland to legalise online gaming, gambling and betting. As per news reports from The Shillong Times, James PK Sangma, the Law and Taxation Minister summoned the representatives of the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) and other UK-based businesses in order to debate about the state’s online gaming and sports betting conditions.

Post the discussion, the association reportedly has launched a UKIBC industry report named ‘Gaming for Growth – India’s Sports and Gaming Market Potential.’

According to the UKIBC’s Gaming Industry Index, Meghalaya is the most gaming-friendly state in India.  As per UKIBC’s perspective on seven major games, namely lottery, horse racing, sports betting, poker, rummy, casino, and fantasy sports, the UKIBC Gaming Industry Index estimates the degree to which each of these three states has legalised gaming and betting in their respective states.

Sharing his thoughts on the legalisation of gambling, betting and gaming, Kevin McCole, Managing Director of UKIBC, said, “We appreciate Meghalaya’s administration for taking a proactive approach to the licensing of games of chance in the state, which would assist the state to generate more money and create jobs.”

“There are strong reasons to work towards this growth taking place under regulations. To do so, we recommend the government of India adopts the Law Commission’s 2018 recommendation that sports betting be regulated. Not least because it will attract FDI, stimulate domestic investment, create jobs, generate government revenue, and enable responsible playing,” McCole further added.
