Anirban Das wins SSS Opening Day PLO Highroller

Winning major online poker tournaments is not something new for Anirban Das. Over the course of each month, he has made it a point to make at least a couple of trophy additions to his cabinet, regardless of which website he wins them on. And when it comes to a big series, he seems even more determined.

Just look at his recent history and you won’t need any more details. In the recent PPL Autumn edition on PokerBaazi, he ended as the only player to have won three titles through the series. Similarly, in Spartan’s SSS series for the month of October, he won three titles as well.

Now yesterday, another edition of the Spartan Super Series (SSS) began on The Spartan Poker, with INR 2.6+ crore guaranteed through 21-25 November and 26 tournaments scheduled through the series. Once again, Das made a brilliant start to the series, winning SSS Event #5 PLO HR – INR 15 lakh GTD, which was the biggest tournament on the opening day of the series.

He plays under the screen name ‘pokernoob’ on Spartan and is always a major contender, having won plenty of online titles in the past. Last night’s PLO Highroller kicked off at 9:30pm, with some very good Indian poker players registering to play, and that was expected, with a high buy-in of INR 22,000 associated with the tournament.

A participation of 90 entries was recorded, which broke the guarantee and created a new prize pool of INR 18 lakh, reserving cash prizes for only the top 8 places in the tournament (min-cash INR 81,000). As the money bubble approached, Arjanveer Chadha aka ‘instrumental’ became the first person to cash out in this PLO tournament.

The grind carried on well into the night and today morning as well, eventually ending at 3:14am. Soon after Chadha, another top pro in Sumit Sapra aka ‘mrgr33n’ cashed out in 7th place for INR 99,000. After that, the 6-figure cashes began and the stakes were high, as Anirban Das entered heads-up with ‘strike12’.

Eventually, Das was able to power through all these opponents as well as his heads-up opponent, taking away the biggest prize of the night – INR 5,35,500. His heads-up partner strike12 had to settle for second place, winning a pretty decent prize of INR 3,37,500 himself.

Gutshot had a talk with Das to congratulate him on yet another tournament victory. He spoke about the tournament as well, saying, “I’m glad to ship a PLO high buy-in tournament, as it’s a game with which I have limited experience. I was short stacked when the FT started but picked up some good spots to have 90% of chips with 3 left. Well played to peacelover17 (3rd place) and strike12.”
