Andhra Pradesh bans online gaming apps; Dream11 in a soup
The Andhra Pradesh government has passed a ban on online games like rummy, poker and fantasy games in the state that involve financial transactions. On 25 September, the government led by Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, passed an ordinance to amend the Andhra Pradesh Gaming Act 1974.
The ordinance came into force with immediate effect. This was enacted according to observations that in all online gaming activities consumers spend large sums of money without actually being able to control the outcome of the result. The Andhra Pradesh Gaming (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020, prohibited:
- Collection or soliciting of bets
- Receipt or distribution of winning or prizes in money or otherwise in respect of any wager or bet
- Any act which is intended to aid, induce, solicit or facilitate wagering or betting or such collection, soliciting, receipt or distribution
- Any act of risking money or playing stakes or otherwise on the result of a game or an event including on a game of skill.
IPL’s title sponsor Dream 11 is a fantasy game company that may face major issues due to this. Andhra Pradesh is home to IPL cricket team Sunrisers Hyderabad and has a major share of online gamers. It is not yet clear when Dream11 put out a notice, but it reported that there were users from Andhra Pradesh who were finding a restrictive notice in their app.
Dream 11 focuses on gameplay that lets you bet on the team that you form. While the word betting is often linked to fantasy sports in India, the apps that fall in this category claim that they are not betting apps. The company says, “Due to recent changes to the Gaming Act in the State of Andhra Pradesh, users from the state will not be able to join paid contests on Dream11. The laws in Assam, Odisha, Telangana, Nagaland and Sikkim are unclear on games of skills may be played for a fee.”
Fantasy Akhada, a fantasy sports platform has also issued a notice to it’s players by stating that those users that are residing in Andhra Pradesh are requested to refrain from playing on their application. To know more online gambling across India, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com
