There’s always poker action taking place across the globe and for South American poker players, the partypoker Latin American Poker Championship hosted its debut event at the Enjoy Conrad Resort and Casino in Punta del Este, Uruguay. The tournament series was scheduled to take place between 24th February and 4th March 2018.
The Main Event began on 28th February and it was Brazilian poker player Amauri Grutka who walked away with top honours, shipping the tournament for the first-place prize of $200,000. To secure the title, he had to beat a massive field of 1,137 entries; the tournament ended on Sunday evening.
Finishing in 4th place was his countryman and partypoker pro, Joao Simao, who has been enjoying a good run in live poker tournaments of late. He reached the final table thrice at the partypoker MILLIONS Germany, Rozvadov, and then followed it up with a 2nd place finish at the Latin American Poker Championship high roller event; he bagged $60,000 for his 4th place finish here.
For Grutka, this prize of $200k became his career-best live cash, beating his previous best score of $41,649 in 2013, and more than doubling his career live poker earnings. He faced China’s Yi Lin in heads up, the only non-South American player to reach the final table.
While Grutka had a short stack among the final three, he did well to go into heads up with an equal stack as Yi Lin. We expected a long heads up battle, but it proved to be a very quick game from there on. The game came to an end as both players went all-in with Grutka holding pocket queens and Lin holding A-K. The flop opened Q-10-2 and Grutka was able to take home the championship, flopping a set of queens!
