51st place finish for Kartik Ved in WSOP 2019 Main Event

Not only are we reporting a brilliant personal run by one of the best poker players in India currently, but we’re also reporting a run that will inspire hundreds more to get into the game and play it the way it’s supposed to be played. Kartik Ved has put in long hours and days and months of work, and it has all shown in Las Vegas this year at the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

For Ved, he ends the series on a high, just the way he began it. He was one of two Indians to finish in the top 30 of the BIG50 event at the start of the series and he bows out in style too, recording the second-best finish for an Indian player in the history of the WSOP Main Event. It’s second to only Nishant Sharma’s 34th place finish in the WSOP 2018 Main Event last year; you can see our list of the top Main Event finishes by Indian players prior to this one run by Ved.

Ved was the only Indian to progress to Day 6 of the Main Event at Rio All Suites Casino and Hotel, with Akshay Nasa and Yudhishter Jaswal falling out the previous day. He kept marching on, until his trailblazing run finally came to an end today, hitting the rail in 51st place. Remember, the original field was of 8,569 entries, and Ved earned a whopping prize of $173,015 (~INR 1.18 Crore) for this effort.

He didn’t have the biggest stack throughout the day but always managed to have just about an average stack and whenever he took a hit, he managed to come back and stay alive in the competition. The day began with only 106 runners in contention and towards the final couple hours of the day, he finally fell to Nicholas Danias.

Ved lost a major chunk of his stack a few minutes before hitting the rail. The hand that eventually put an end to this fantastic run was when US pro Danias raised to 600k from the hijack and Ved called for the rest of his 475k chips from the Big Blind. Danias revealed pocket Tens and the board ran dry which didn’t help Ved’s hand of Q8.

Ved’s previous best live score was in this same event last year, finishing 128th in the WSOP 2018 Main Event for $57k. He has literally tripled his previous best live cash and has catapulted to #11 on India’s all-time poker earnings list as well, still very much at the start of his poker career. This run also became India’s largest cash in Las Vegas this year, overtaking Nikita Luther’s $109k that she earned for her runner-up finish in the WPT500 Las Vegas Main Event a couple of weeks back.

While this is a really impressive finish and it adds a massive amount to Ved’s bankroll, it will be slightly heart-breaking to be so close and yet so far. The overnight chip leader Timothy Su continues to hold the lead as the final 50 continue to battle it out.
