2021 WSOP: Abhinav Iyer’s Dream Run Comes To An End

As the Main Event (ME) of the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) draws closer, all eyes are on the title spot. Several Indian players were seen at this event, however, only one player survived till Day 6. The last Indian standing was none other than Abhinav Iyer who is India’s first solo WSOP bracelet winner.

In the latest update coming from the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, is that Iyer has departed the ME on Day 6. The play on Day 6 started with 96 players all set to lock horns and make their way to Day 7.

At level 28, British player Jack Oliver opened with 240,000 from the button. Australia’s Sean Ragozzini and Iyer called. The flop opened to  {5-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades} and Ragozzini checked. Iyer shoved all-in with 1,000,000 chips and Ragozzini called again. Oliver folded.

Iyer had suited connectors {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}, while Ragozzini held suited connectors {q-Spades}{9-Spades}. Iyer had a stronger five-pair hand versus Ragozzini’s queen-high. However, the turn opened to {q-Hearts}, and the {9-Hearts} came on the river, which changed the game. This is when  Ragozzini took the lead with his two-pair QQ,99 and Iyer departed at the 60th spot with a pay cheque of $1,13,800.

Iyer was India’s last hope to win the ME of the WSOP 2021.  However, with this former WSOP bracelet winner departing, the hopes for a gold bracelet remain unfulfilled. Notable Indian players like Yudhishter Jaswal, Vidur Sethi, Shashank Jain, Kalyan Chakravarthy among others were also seen at this event. Only Iyer made it to Day 6. Unfortunately, India will not get its first WSOP Main Event winner this year. But, a shiny gold WSOP ME bracelet will always be the aim for our talented Indian poker players.
