13 booked for gambling in Vejalpur and cash worth INR 1.22L seized

Incidents of gambling have been on a rise in Ahmedabad even during the nationwide lockdown. The Ministry of Home Affairs initiated Unlock 3.0 for August 2020 which removed night curfews and permitted gymnasiums and yoga centres to reopen from 5 August. Independence Day celebrations are permitted in the country, requiring that social distancing is followed. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu imposed a lockdown for the whole month, while West Bengal imposed lockdown twice a week. 

In the early hours of Sunday in Ahmedabad, Vejalpur police raided a house in Shrinandnagar-3 and detained 13 individuals for being involved in a gambling activity. The police received a tip off as they were patrolling near Makarba junction about a group of people involved in an illegal activity at the house of Viral Kayastha in Shrinandnagar-3. Acting on the tip off, the police raided the suspect’s house and found seven persons including Kayastha engrossed in a game, while six others were gambling in another room.

The police arrested the 13 individuals and seized INR 1.22 Lakhs in cash along with other items relating to gambling. The police identified them as Varun Jadhav, resident of Parishar phase 2 in Khokra, Anirudh Vaghela, Mitesh Bhatt and Prakash Shrimali residents of Vejalpur, Prerak Shah and Dhaval Patel resident of Shrinand Nagar-3, Gota residents Virat and Vishal Patel, Paldi residents Saumil Shah Makarba residents Akash Bharvad and Nikul Bharvad and Ramsundar Yadav from Shrinandnagar-1. All of them were booked under the gambling act and were taken into custody by Vejalpur Police

In another incident, on Friday, police officials received a tip off about gambling activities at a house in Sun city near Sobo Centre in south Bopal area of Ahmedabad. Six individuals were arrested in the raid wherein INR 22,ooo cash was seized and the accused were booked under the Gambling Act. With cases rising in cities, it is advised that each and everyone of us to take necessary precaution by following social distancing in an attempt to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
