WSOP Flashhback: Jeff Lisandro Wins Three Bracelets in One Summer

Due to coronavirus pandemic the highly awaited 51st annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas has been postponed. The festival has given the poker world tremendous memories and unforgettable legends and today in the WSOP Flashback we will fly away back to the year 2009.

We absolutely remember that year when Joe Cada became the youngest ever WSOP Main Event champion just eight days shy of his 22nd birthday, surpassing Peter Eastgate. The year stood out in history for several things and one of them was Australia’s Jeff Lisandro becoming the first ever player to triumph Stud, Stud hi-lo, and Razz event in a single year, earning him the Player of the Year title!

Lisandro, well-known as a cash specialist is regarded as one of the premier Seven Card Stud player in the world. Anyone who was present in the Amazon Room that year on 22 June got to witness poker history. To this date, the three-bracelet hat trick hasn’t been accomplished in a single summer by any player except Phil Ivey in the 2002.

In 2004, Lisandro finished 3rd in 35th WSOP PLO as well as Seven Card Stud World Championship. In 2006, the man from Perth made a deep run in the Main Event, finishing 17th for $659K. His first bracelet in 2009 came in $1,500 Seven Card Stud after defeating Rod Pardey Sr., a two-time bracelet winner for $124K. After 12-days he took down $10,000 World Championship Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo, one of the toughest poker formats for an impressive $431K. The champion outlasted players like Doyle Brunson, Abe Mosseri, Mike Wattel and several others. Jeffery Lisandro completed the trifecta by taking down $2,500 Seven Card Razz for $188,390. He wasn’t shy of poker pros like Eric Rodawig, Warwick Mirzikinian, ultimately eliminating writer Michael Craig in heads-up.

Lisandro said, “I had a feeling I was gonna win three. In all honesty, I really did. This is something that’s been brewing inside of me. I had a point to prove. I’ve had an incredible record the last several years – cashed something like 25 or 26 times – and made multiple final tables where I feel like I got pretty unlucky. So I only had one bracelet to show for it and I felt coming into this year I could work harder, push myself harder. And that’s exactly what I did.”

Lisandro is an active player in the World Series. As of today, his live earnings exceeds $5.70 million. After winning 2014 WSOP Asia Pacific $1,650 AUD pot-limit Omaha event, the Australian grabbed his sixth bracelet for $44,796. In 2009, he was the fifth player in WSOP history to win three bracelets in a single year, after Walter Pearson, Ted Forrest, Phil Hellmuth and Ivey.
