WSOP Flashback: “You call, it’s gonna be all over, baby.”

The craziness around poker’s biggest festival, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) continues on GG Network. The year 2020 disappointed several live poker lovers but the online grinders are certainly having the best of quarantine life. After the conclusion of 31 events on WSOP.com, players are crushing it on another platform. And we all know that the most central and showstopping festival cannot run dry, giving us the most dramatic and captivating quotes and today we take you 22 years ago…

He is nicknamed as the ‘Prince of Poker’ who has earned 5 World Series gold bracelets, the only player to have won the prestigious Main Event as well as $50,000 Player’s Championship. Broadcasted all over the TV channels, “You call, gonna be all over baby!” With these famous words, Scotty Nguyen became a legend as Kevin McBride made the call for all his chips and proved Nguyen’s words true, simply taking home millions of dollars.

In 1997, Nguyen won the $2K WSOP Omaha 8 or Better, but eventually lost those winnings. The very next year he went on to win the 1998 WSOP Main Event but the champion doesn’t tie the gold piece around his wrist after losing his brother in a car accident the next day.

Delivering one of the most famous poker quote, Nguyen is well-known for being an outgoing and friendly player. On the final hand of the 1998 WSOP ME, a full house was dealt on the table (8♣ 9♦ 9♥ 8♥ 8♠). Nguyen made the memorable quote to his opponent Kevin McBride who called, saying “I call. I play the board.” Nguyen beat McBride with a better full house by holding 9♣ J♦ and simply took home a whopping $1 million.

In an interview with Pokernews, Nguyen mentioned, “It doesn’t matter how bad your World Series is going, you can always turn it around in the Main Event. When I won the Main Event in 1998, the way I played the game made it fun for everyone. That’s how poker got so big, not because of Moneymaker. Five years before he came along, I talked to people, I laughed, I joked. I didn’t just sit there.”

The  Vietnamese American poker pro has over 40 WSOP cashes and five bracelets. So far he has accumulated over $12 million in live earnings with his career best in 2008 WSOP $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. for $1.98 million. And here’s a list of Nguyen’s WSOP win:

  • 1997 $2,000 Omaha 8 or Better – $156,959
  • 1998 $10,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship – $1,000,000
  • 2001 $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha – $178,480
  • 2001 $5,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Split Eight or Better – $287,580
  • 2008 $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship – $1,989,120

“Money?” the legend continued, “The fans are more important. It doesn’t matter how many tournaments you win, you can even be Player of the Year. But if you don’t win the Main Event nobody will recognize you. The Main Event is everything to any poker player, it’s the dream. That’s our goal, to win the WSOP Main Event.”
