WSOP 2024: Phil Ivey Wins 11th Bracelet Ending 10-Year Drought

Phil Ivey, widely regarded as one of the greatest poker players of all time, has added another chapter to his illustrious career by winning his 11th World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet. The victory, achieved in Event #29: $10,000 2-7 Triple Draw Championship, moves Ivey past legendary players like Johnny Chan, Erik Seidel, and Doyle Brunson, and into second place on the all-time leaderboard, just behind Phil Hellmuth.

Ivey’s win marks the end of a decade-long drought at the WSOP, and it’s a testament to his poker prowess. Despite the evolution of poker and the rise of new players, Ivey has continued to adapt and thrive, even as his priorities have shifted from the game to his family life.

“I’m motivated. If I can play, I will. A lot of times I’m not in town,” Ivey said, reflecting on his decision to continue playing despite the challenges. “I keep showing up. Playing, performing. I want to keep winning,” further added the 11-time WSOP bracelet winner.

Ivey’s victory was a thrilling conclusion to Day 4 of the event, which saw three players return to the table after 13 hours of play. Ivey, who entered as the short stack, made a dramatic comeback, drawing a wheel in a massive pot against Jason Mercier to virtually tie Danny Wong for the chip lead. Wong, however, pulled away, and Ivey was forced to make a comeback against Mercier, ultimately sending him to the rail in third place. Ivey then applied pressure on Wong, eventually taking the chip lead and never looking back. His victory was marked by a nail-biting heads-up battle against Wong.

Final Hand

Phil Ivey raised to 240,000 from the button, and Danny Wong responded by moving all-in for 250,000. The two players engaged in a thrilling draw, with Wong drawing three cards on the first draw and Ivey taking two. On the second draw, both players drew one card each.

As the final draw approached, Wong stood pat, while Ivey took one final card. The tension was palpable as the players revealed their hands. Wong tabled T 8 7 6 2, a ten-eight, while Ivey revealed his hand before the draw, which consisted of 7 7 5 4 3. Ivey pitched his seven, and was rewarded with a 2X, making him the winner of the hand and securing his 11th World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet.
