WSOP 2024 Max Late Reg Controversy Rakes Up A Storm

According to high rollers like Chris Brewer, some players have been entering World Series of Poker (WSOP) events after the official registration has closed, sparking a debate and calls for solutions. Jack Effel, Vice President of the WSOP, assured PokerNews that no players have been abusing the late registration rules. “Max late reg” refers to players registering just before the cut-off, starting with minimal chips—often 20 big blinds or fewer. This strategy has its perks, such as only playing briefly before the bubble bursts, and a couple of quick double-ups can secure a spot in the money.

However, Chris Brewer and others have raised concerns about players being allowed to register 5-10 minutes after the cut-off, or even longer. Effel clarified that the verification process for player registration can take time, which sometimes results in players arriving at their seats a few minutes late. The time it takes to walk from registration to the table can also contribute to delays.

Effel explained that pausing the clock to wait for all registered players to take their seats, as some have suggested, would be unfair to those already playing and would extend the tournament day. He emphasised that tournament staff will only allow players in line before registration closes to enter and are open to suggestions for improving the process. Effel is willing to discuss these concerns with players on-site at the WSOP.

Brewer’s tweet ignited a lively discussion on social media, with notable players like Justin Bonomo and Isaac Haxton weighing in. Bonomo argued, “If they’re not there in time, they shouldn’t get seated. It shouldn’t matter when they got in the cashier line or whatever. The only exception worth making is for people who busted bullet 1 in the last 10 minutes. Everyone else had many hours to reg.”

Haxton referred to Brewer’s concerns as a “game integrity issue” that is “so easy to solve.” Other players, such as John Monnette and Jared Griener, noted instances of players taking their seats up to 20 minutes after registration closed.

Suggestions to address these issues included pausing the clock until all registered players are seated and making scheduling adjustments. The debate continues as players and organizers seek a fair resolution to the registration timing concerns at the WSOP.
