WPT Championship Titles

The World Poker Tour (WPT) is one of the most prominent poker brands in the world. They have been organising some of the most significant poker events since 2002, with one of their most prominent events being the Championship event. With the WPT World Championship all set to kick-start in December 2023, let’s have a look at all the players who have had the most successful outings in the tournament series.

Players With Most WPT World Championship Titles

Darren Elias

Darren Elias has been one of the best performers at WPT events in the recent past. He has earned $4,731,452 in the tournament series and claimed four WPT titles! The United States-based poker pro had one of the best seasons during WPT 2014-2015 season, where he won two titles before winning again in 2016-2017. His latest win came in the Bobby Baldwin Classic during the 2017-2018 edition of WPT.

While he is the only player to have four championships to his name, there are a lot of players who could match his tally in 2023! It remains interesting to see if Elias will be able to add to his tally this year or if we will see any other player match up his score with as many as six players in contention for the same.

Brian Altman

The American player has captured three WPT Championships so far, with his first mega win coming during the 13th season of WPT, which ran between 2014-2015. He later followed it up with excellent performances in the 18th season, which started in July 2019 but was stretched till 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

He also won in the 19th season to become the seventh player to have three WPT titles under his belt. Can he join Darren Elias in the elite list of being the only players to win four championships this year? Only time will tell.

Eric Afriat

The Canada-born poker player managed to record his first win in the WPT Championships event during the 12th season at Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown (2013-2014), with the second one coming four years later at the Borgata Winter Poker Open during the 2017-2018 season. Eric Afriat’s latest win came during the COVID-19 hit season, which ran between 2019 and 2021 at the Fallsview Poker Classic.

David Rheem

David Rheem, aka ‘Chino’, sits at the eighth position on the WPT All-Time Money List, having earned $4,063,043 at WPT live cash events. He won his first WPT championship during the 7th edition at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic before emerging victorious again in the 11th Season during 2012-2013.

His next win came during the 2015-2016 WPT season, which featured 21 events and saw David Rheem join Gus Hansen, Carlos Mortensen, and Anthony Zinno as the only players with three-time WPT titles. With quite a few WPT events lined up for 2023, it would be interesting to see if Chino can break free from the five-man tussle and claim his fourth win.

Anthony Zinno

Sitting at the 21st position on the WPT All Time Money List, Anthony Zinno has pocketed $3,112,609 across WPT events. He has undoubtedly been one of the best players, with three titles against his name as well. The first major win came during the Borgata Poker Open in 2013 to April 2014. After a successful 12th season finish which saw him win his first title, Zinno shipped two back-to-back titles in the 13th season during the 2014- 2015 period.

Carlos Mortensen

Carlos Mortensen has pocketed over $12,107,757 in total live earnings, while $6,738,672 out of his total winnings have been cashed at the World Poker Tour. He has pocketed the highest amount of cash in WPT with ‘The Matador, also winning three titles.

All of his wins came more than a decade ago, with the first one being in the third season, named Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship from 2004 to April 2005. His second triumph was during the 2006 to April 2007 in season 5, while the Spaniard’s latest win came during the Season 8 Hollywood Poker Open in 2009 to April 2010.

Gus Hansen

Gus Hansen was one of the brightest players when the WPT Championship started, with the poker pro winning two titles in the first season itself from 2002 to 2003. To top it off, he also emerged victorious in the second season, which was the Caribbean Poker Adventure, from 2003 to 2004. However, it has all been a downward curve for him, with the Denmark-born poker pro failing to replicate his success in tournaments later on. With nearly two decades gone since his latest title triumph, it remains interesting to see if Hansen can script a fairy tale comeback and make it to the coveted list of WPT Championship winners.
