The World Poker Tour (WPT) India is back in India’s Las Vegas, Goa, this April. WPT Prime India 2023 runs from 12th to 18th April 2023. The seven-day-long series is all set to bring back one of the world’s largest and most celebrated poker series, WPT, to India after a hiatus of four long years.
As the Indian poker fraternity gears up to participate in one of the biggest poker festivals of the year—WPT Prime India April 2023, let’s take a walk down memory lane and recall the time when the current defending champion, Ashish Munot, took down the ₹55,000 buy-in WPT India 2019 Main Event.
Ashish Munot
Ashish Munot is one of the most respected names in the Indian poker circuit. Popularly known by his username, ‘OMG_spew,’ and ‘Donkey07,’ the poker pro has been an inspiration to many. He has been there in the circuit for over five years now and has managed to create a name for himself with some fantastic results, both online and live. He has been grinding at various poker series across the globe, including the Asian Poker Tour (APT), Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT), World Series of Poker (WSOP) and World Poker Tour (WPT).

Ashish Munot nailed the WPT India 2019 Main Event and cashed an impressive ₹63,48,641. The pro surpassed an entry field of 630 players to emerge victorious. Out of these, the top nine players, namely Yuvraj Chaudhary, Jai Saha, Rajeev Kanjani, Sami Sipila, Sahil Nair, Nishant Sharma, Yash Punjawat, and Shardul Parthasarathi, made it to the final table.
Finally, it was Munot vs. Chaudhary in the heads-up clash. The swingy, hour-long heads-up saw Munot walk away with the title, 1,000 points in the WPT Asia-Pacific Player of the Year race, and a $3,500 WPT Passport, which he could use at any global WPT event. This victory also marked his career-best live cash, which remains to be so to date.
On the final hand, Munot posted a 550K pre-flop bet. To this, Chaudhary shoved all-in for 5.5 Million and was called by Munot. Chaudhary flipped queens while Munot uncovered tens. The board of A,7,4,8 came in favour of Chaudhary, but the river showed a ten and turned the game in favour of Munot.
Ashish Munot has multiple online poker titles to his name. These include daily features like Destiny, The Summit, The Pride and The Endeavour, among others. He has also nailed multiple marquee titles like APT Mini Main Event, and others.
According to Hendon Mob, Ashish Munot has $346,670 in live tournament earnings throughout his career. His best live cash so far has been $89,576, which he earned by taking down the WPT India 2019 Main Event title. He has five cashes at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), all of which he earned at the 2022 WSOP.
He won his first-ever live title by nailing the Kick-off event at Baadshah Gaming Live Tournament in 2018. This was followed by the WPT India 2019. In 2022, he took down the APPT Manila NLH 6-handed event. He then shipped the NagaWorld SuperStack 50K at the WPT Prime Cambodia in Phnom Penh.
Most recently, he was seen grinding at APT Hanoi in February 2023, wherein he cashed $4,617 for his 22nd-place finish at the APT High Roller 8-Max event.
With Munot still in form, will he be able to defend his title at the upcoming 2023 edition of WPT Prime India 2023 and once again prove that he is one of the best poker pros in the country? Well, only time will tell. Till then, let’s wait and fasten your seatbelts to witness a poker feast in Goa this April.
