In a rather strange incident at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2022, two three of spades (two cards of the same rank and suit) showed up on the flop, leaving all the players in a state of confusion and dilemma. It was unexpected, and players couldn’t resist themselves from taking a picture of the blunder (or bluff?).
It was at Event #68: $1,000 Million Dollar Bounty, when the incident occurred. Players immediately pulled out their phones to click pictures of the unusual phenomenon when the unexpected situation occurred. However, this didn’t go well with the WSOP organisers and Caesars Entertainment, as neither parties can afford such incidents occurring and see them being reported in the media. The WSOP reportedly threatened players with a ban from Caesars Entertainment’ properties if they clicked pictures of the cards, which directly proved the WSOP’s goof up.
First, the floor women told the players that they would be disqualified if they took pictures. This was followed by a tournament-wide announcement saying that the players would be barred from all Caesars’ properties. The game of poker is always played with a single deck of cards, which means there can only be one three of spades. Having two cards of the same rank and suit can result in the organisers being charged with a case of cheating.

Even though taking pictures was prohibited, some players managed to click pictures and share them on Twitter.

How the fuck does the World Series of Poker flop TWO 3 of spades? That is fucking insane and shady as hell. And then they threaten to DQ/bar people who take a picture of their major f***-up. What an absolute joke. Wow. #WSOP” (sic)

That’s not all. People went on to create an independent Twitter account to highlight the blunder. The account named WSOP Mystery Three goes by the username ‘LOLThreeaments.’ The profile description read, “Popping up when you least expect it. Post selfies with me at your peril!”
This was not the only controversial error to occur at the WSOP 2022. A few days before this incident, a joker card had shown up on the flop at a $1,100 No-Limit Hold’em event. Poker doesn’t have a place for the joker card, and such a flop was rather shocking and amusing at the same time.
Additionally, it wasn’t the first time the exact same card turned up on the flop in a game. In 2015, in a high-stakes cash game between poker legends Doug Polk and Dan Colman on PokerGo, two queens of clubs fell on the flop. Between all the above blunders being made and reported, one wonders whom to blame?
