Since the beginning of the new decade, all eyes were on the richest poker tournament of the world, the 51st annual World Series of Poker (WSOP). While this was also the hottest debate of the year on the social media after the novel coronavirus outbreak, the WSOP authority reassured us several times that there has been a constant monitoring of the situation and the schedule “remain intact and are planned to go on without interruption.”
However, the final news came out on Monday afternoon that the 2020 WSOP has been postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and is now targeted for fall of 2020 which seems to be the first-time in event’s history. The exact dates are yet to be announced.

Undoubtedly, the series stands out in the poker calendar, with hundreds and thousands of players flocking to the middle of the Nevada desert hoping to grab the stunning gold bracelet. Although, it was evident with landmark events like Wimbledon and Olympics being cancelled, there was certainly no way the WSOP could take place. After all, live poker tours attract numerous enthusiasts from around the world.
The WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart said, “We are committed to running the World Series of Poker this year but need additional time to proceed on our traditional scale while prioritizing guest and staff well-being.” He continued, “In the interim, official WSOP competitions are expected to be played online this summer, and we will soon announce details of an expanded series of tournaments to be played on WSOP.com and through partnership with international operators, which will allow players to chase WSOP glory from their homes.”
The Indian poker pros were pumped and set for the prestigious event, we also hoped that the country would have witnessed its 4th WSOP bracelet after three consecutive years of being successful!
The six-time WSOP bracelet winner, Daniel Negreanu’s prediction was quite right when he said, “Personally, I don’t see a WSOP happening this summer. Maybe it happens in the fall, but I would be really surprised if all this blows over by then. There really isn’t much you can do to safeguard a poker tournament from the spread of germs.”
The poker community seemed to be quite split about whether the event should go ahead or not. A few weeks earlier, Zachery Elwood tweeted asking, “If WSOP were held in May would you still go.” And surprisingly it turns out, several diehard players willing to play regardless of the current situation.
According to WSOP.com, whenever the 2020 edition takes place, it will include the $10,000 buy-in Main Event championship. With organizers targeting the fall of 2020, players can still hope for a 51st annual edition. Keep reading GutshotMagazine.com to know the latest poker updates and tournaments in the country.
