Star Casino Fined for Breaching the Social Distancing Guidelines

The degree at which the coronavirus spreads is unceasing and containing it might become difficult. The Star Casino in Sydney has been hit by coronavirus as it spreads around New South Wales. Liquor and Gaming NSW has issued a $5000, after groups of patrons were seen standing and mingling while consuming alcohol, breaching the social distancing guidelines at the venue on Saturday night.

Acting Director of Compliance for Liquor and Gaming Dimitri Argeres said “There is a risk of COVID-19 transmission if people are mingling while under the effect of alcohol. Under current guidelines, anyone consuming alcohol is required to be seated“.

The casino is working with New South Wales Health Officials to trace any contact including staff, members and other gamblers. Businesses face fines of up to $55,000 and a further $27,500 penalty may apply for each day an offence continues. Individuals face a fine of up to $11,000, six months’ imprisonment, or both.

Argeres further added, “We want to send a strong message that businesses must manage these risks to ensure individual patrons and the community are protected. It’s also really important that customers take responsibility by adhering to a venue’s protocols, providing their contact details when asked, and reporting any business that is not doing the right thing.”

The Star Casino reopened on 1st June after lockdown but closes daily from 6 am to 10 am for a deep clean. It has not been ordered to shut down and remains open as it continues to adhere to its COVID-19 safety plan. The COVID-positive person who visited The Star is one of the 21 cases linked to a cluster at the Crossroads Hotel in the south-western Sydney suburb of Casula, popular with interstate truck drivers and locals.

NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said other venues across Sydney may have been exposed to the virus between June 27 and July 10 after visits from people linked to the outbreak. These include Picton Hotel, Planet Fitness Gym in Casula, Canterbury Leagues Club, Narellan Town Centre and Zone Bowling in Villawood. People who visited between these dates have been urged to watch for symptoms and get tested at the earliest.
