Woman Employee Suspected in South Korea’s Landing Casino $13 Million Cash Heist

As per news reports the Landing Casino at Jeju Shinhwa World, South Korea had around $13 million cash missing. The media reports further state that a 55-year-old Malaysian female employee of the casino is suspected to be involved. The cash was found missing on Monday, January 4.

According to multiple news reports, investors were told by Landing International Development Ltd that one employee seemingly had robbed around $13.4 million. The suspected Malaysian woman is currently being tracked down by the authorities when she did not turn up for work after the holidays.

Details submitted by the Yonhap agency revealed that the CCTV footage from around the time of the heist was erased. Police also suspect the involvement of few others as the theft was too big for only a single person to carry out. Experts estimate that the amount of cash stolen would weigh around 280 kilograms or more and that it would be too heavy for one person to carry.

As per the most recent development, about $10.9 million in cash was recovered by authorities from two separate locations i.e., the VIP room safe in Jeju Casino and a place suspected to be the unidentified female employee’s house. While law enforcement is not ruling out the possibility of more people being involved and have even identified a Chinese national as one of the accomplices.

Even with this unfortunate event, South Korea is still years ahead than some of its Asian counterparts when it comes to legalizing casino gambling. But recent reports state that Thailand may soon follow suit as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced that he was open to the possibility. The country has been opposed to the proposal of decriminalizing gambling since decades, but the coronavirus pandemic has pushed many government officials to rethink the idea.

The pandemic has also greatly affected the country’s economy which led to the discussions for reforming the country’s strict laws against gambling and allow regulated and legalized practices.
