Some Of The Richest Players In WSOP History

Poker, over the years, has moved from the fringes to the mainstream, and that is largely down to the overwhelming success of the WSOP (World Series of Poker) tour. The WSOP has heightened the excitement and brought the fans closer to the action by live streaming many of the biggest events.

Indeed, for some, nothing quite beats the thrill of playing poker for real money and it is quite an alluring prospect. In fact, inspired by the pros, gamblers may flock to some of the best real money casinos to test their luck, and they will be presented with a wealth of cash games to keep them occupied.

However, it is the biggest stars in the game who have left an indelible mark. We’re not just talking about the number of WSOP bracelets they have amassed. No, we’re referring more specifically to their cash outs at tournaments.

In this in-depth guide, we will share our findings on some of the richest players in the WSOP history, although do bear in mind that this is in no set order.

Phil Ivey (USA)

Kicking off this carefully curated list is Phil Ivey. The American, who is often dubbed the ‘Tiger Woods of poker’ is arguably the GOAT (Greatest of All Time). With 10 WSOP bracelets to his name, Ivey is a tough competitor, but he is also innately talented.

Oh, and let’s not forget he has earned some serious sums of money. A glance at the all-time money list shows Ivey has earned over $41million during his career. Yes, Ivey has become a formidable force in the high-stakes environment, and you are most likely to find him sitting in the big $4,000/$8,000 mixed cash game at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Daniel Negreanu (Canada)

With the moniker ‘Kid Poker’, Daniel Negreanu is another one of those veterans that has graced the professional scene and has earned serious respect along the way. After winning his first tournament in 1997, the Canadian has also become one of the most affluent on the circuit.

Currently, Negreanu is fifth on the all-time money list with over $50m under his belt, and his biggest cash out in 2023 at the time of writing arrived in the $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em event back in July.

Winning has come naturally to Negreanu over the years, and while his schedule has been unrelenting, he is a fan favorite.

Phil Hellmuth (USA)

A Poker Hall of Famer since 2007, Phil Hellmuth lit up the WSOP scene when he burst onto it, and he became the then-youngest Main Event champion in 1989 at the age of 24. But it’s fair to assert that Hellmuth has been a bit of a polarizing character. His expletive-filled rants meant he acquired the rather unfortunate nickname of ‘The Poker Brat’.

That parked to one side, Hellmuth has amassed 17 WSOP bracelets, and he has seen his personal wealth soar in the game. With nearly $30m gained in career earnings, Hellmuth’s talent is undeniable.

Although his schedule has been slightly quieter in 2023, one of his highlights will have been the $803,818 he pocketed during his involvement at the $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty No-Limit Hold’em, and his buy-in was $10,000. Aside from huge cash outs, Hellmuth has won at least one WSOP bracelet in every decade from the 1980s to the 2020s.

Justin Bonomo (USA)

If we were judging players solely on their all-time earnings, Justin Bonomo would be atop this list. Well, the nearly $63m bagged pays testament to the way in which the American has piled up the money.

In total, he has had 63 cashes during an extraordinary career that has spanned over a decade. The past 12 months, in particular, have been rather profitable for the online player who goes by the alias “ZeeJustin”. Well, the $295,169 Bonomo picked up at the $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em event will have gone down a treat.

Final Thoughts

From what we have seen, the poker players we have picked here are powerhouses who are among the most affluent the game has ever seen.

Their influence can’t be overstated, and they have made significant contributions to the WSOP circuit. While money isn’t only one barometer of success, for the purposes of this guide, the aforementioned players fit the bill. For more news and updates, keep reading Gutshot Magazine.
