Sealed Super Marios Cartridge Auctioned For USD 6,60,000

The original unopened cartridge of Super Mario Bros Nintendo has been auctioned for INR 4,84,48,620 (USD 6,60,000) and has broken all records as this is the most expensive game to be sold. The collectible was sold from Heritage Auctions in the city of Dallas. This auction house announced the sale through its Twitter account. 

Price eclipses previous record of $114,000!

On the official auction page, Heritage Auctions mentioned, “Not only is this one of the finest plastic-sealed copies with a perforated cardboard hang tag we have ever offered of any black box title, but it is also the oldest sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. This is the fourth version of Super Mario Bros. ever produced. The timing of production for this product was considerably shorter than usual.”

The page further mentioned that the nationwide release for the console came in mid to late 1986. And black box games distributed for that release did not have the ‘Game Pak NES-GP’ code. Heritage Auctions also added that Nintendo managed to add the trademark symbol to the Nintendo Entertainment System on their game boxes at the beginning of 1987.

This Super Mario Bros. cartridge still has its retail hang tag, a trademark symbol and it was a part of a low print run. In 2020, a sealed cartridge of Super Mario Bros. was sold for USD 1,56,000 (INR 1,14,10,854) by Heritage Auctions, the same auction house that sold this one. In the past, several such copies of cartoons have been in demand. A copy of Mike Tyson’s punch-out was sold for USD 1,02,000, a copy of Mega Man was sold for USD 1,44,000, and a copy of Tetris was bought for USD 36,000.
